Bet365 Group Ltd. is a UK-based online gambling company currently making inroads into the burgeoning NJ sports betting market through a deal it reportedly signed with the recently opened Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.
Bet365 currently offers various sports betting, poker, casino and bingo sites in Europe. The company holds sports betting, online casino and online poker licenses in Gibraltar.
Bet365 started in 2000 as a chain of UK sports betting shops headquartered in the city of Stoke-on-Trent. However, it sold the chain in 2005 to focus on online gambling opportunities. It is now one of the world’s largest online gambling companies.
Bet365 and Hard Rock Atlantic City
British billionaire Denise Coates is the company’s founder, joint chief executive and majority shareholder. Coates salary of £217 million in 2017 made here the highest paid executive in the UK that year. Her brother, John Coates, is joint chief executive. The siblings’ father, Peter Coates, is bet365’s chairman. He is also chairman of the Stoke City football club.
Bet365 is the club’s shirt sponsor and title sponsor for the stadium it calls home.
The company has yet to publicly announce its sports betting agreement with Hard Rock. However, correspondence between the company and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, obtained by PlayNJ revealed details of the deal.
According to the documents, bet365 will run NJ sports betting operations via Hard Rock AC’s gambling license. However, the arrangement is still awaiting approval from the DGE and the exact nature of the partnership is unknown.
At the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City opening, Hard Rock International CEO Jim Allen publicly stated the company was facing various sports betting restrictions based on a partnership with the National Football League and the Miami Dolphins. Although, Allen also said Hard Rock would continue to pursue sports betting options for the property.
The DGE documents actually revealed the deal between bet365 and Hard Rock had been signed nine days prior to the opening of Hard Rock Atlantic City.
Bet365 and NJ sports betting
Bet365 and Hard Rock Atlantic City join a growing list of NJ sportsbook and sports betting sites. New Jersey lawmakers made sports betting legal at casinos and racetracks June 11. The state was given the go-ahead to pass sports betting legislation when the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a federal ban on sports betting May 14.
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is currently running sports betting operations out of its Borgata Racebook, which has been renamed the Borgata Race & Sports Book. MGM Resorts is also in the final stages of design plans to remodel the Borgata Race & Sports Book.
The former Revel Casino Hotel reopened as Ocean Resort Casino on June 28. It is also running sports betting operations with UK bookmaking competitor William Hill US in a temporary facility. Its William Hill Sportsbook, in the middle of the casino floor, will become operational in September 2018. But in the meantime, a temporary sportsbook is up and running.
Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport is home to its own William Hill Sportsbook. It was the first sportsbook in New Jersey to start taking bets.
Finally, fantasy sports operator FanDuel, which recently merged with Betfair US, opened the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands Racetrack on July 14.
